Commentary:

We live in a world increasingly fueled by outrage. Anger travels quickly, accusations are rewarded with attention, and conflict can become a form of entertainment. It is easy to believe that strength means speaking louder, striking harder, or making certain that the other side loses. But Jesus taught a different kind of strength. He called His followers to be peacemakers.

A peacemaker is not someone who ignores truth or avoids every disagreement. Peace without truth is only temporary silence. Christlike peace is rooted in moral courage. It requires us to control our own spirit before attempting to correct someone else. Think of a fire in dry grass. One spark can spread rapidly, but someone still has to decide whether to throw another match. In our homes, communities, churches, and public conversations, we possess that same agency. We can intensify anger, or we can refuse to feed it.

Freedom depends upon people who can disagree without destroying one another. Self-government requires self-control. When citizens lose the ability to reason together, forgive offenses, and treat opponents as human beings rather than enemies, liberty itself becomes harder to preserve. The Savior showed us a better way. He never compromised truth, yet He continually invited people to repent, reconcile, forgive, and return to God. Being a peacemaker does not mean surrendering conviction. It means carrying conviction with humility, patience, and love. When we choose reconciliation over retaliation, we become more like Christ.

Commentary:

Pride is destructive because it distorts our vision. It makes us overestimate our own strength and underestimate our dependence on God. A proud heart resists correction, excuses weakness, and begins to believe that success is self-made. Like a driver who refuses to check the mirrors because he is confident in the road ahead, pride narrows our awareness until danger is already upon us.

Freedom itself requires humility. A free people must be willing to govern themselves, admit mistakes, honor moral boundaries, and accept responsibility for their choices. Pride does the opposite. It tells us that rules are for others, consequences can be avoided, and wisdom belongs only to us. In families, communities, and nations, pride can turn strength into arrogance and liberty into license. Moral law does not bend simply because we dislike its limits.

The cure for pride is not thinking less of our God-given worth. It is remembering the source of that worth. Every talent, opportunity, breath, and blessing ultimately comes from the Lord. Humility allows us to receive correction without resentment, success without vanity, and hardship without losing faith. Christ possessed perfect power, yet He walked in perfect humility. Following Him means choosing submission to truth over devotion to ego.

Commentary:

Some challenges cannot be overcome by greater effort alone. There are moments when our wisdom feels insufficient, our strength runs thin, and the road ahead seems larger than our ability to travel it. Prayer reminds us that we were never meant to face every burden in our own power. It is an act of faith and agency. We choose to turn toward God, seek His will, and place our concerns before the One who sees what we cannot.

Fasting adds sacrifice to that prayer. By willingly setting aside a physical need for a spiritual purpose, we declare that our dependence on God is greater than our dependence on comfort. Fasting does not force God to give us the answer we want. Instead, it helps bring our desires, fears, and priorities into greater alignment with Him. Like clearing noise from a crowded room, prayer and fasting can quiet distractions so we can recognize truth, receive courage, and move forward with greater spiritual clarity.

Difficult challenges often reveal what governs us. Fear may tell us to retreat. Pride may tell us to rely only on ourselves. Faith invites another path: humble dependence joined with responsible action. We pray, we fast, and then we rise prepared to do what God asks of us. Sometimes the mountain moves. Sometimes God strengthens us to climb it. In either case, prayer and fasting help us become more patient, courageous, disciplined, and Christlike.

Commentary:

When Jesus was asked whether it was lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, He answered with remarkable clarity: give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God. His words teach both responsibility and proper order. We live within communities and nations that require laws, taxes, civic duties, and respect for legitimate authority. Christians should not treat these obligations lightly. Honesty, responsibility, and respect for law are part of living with integrity. Freedom cannot endure when citizens demand its blessings while refusing its responsibilities.

But Christ’s answer also establishes an essential boundary. Government may rightly ask for taxes, obedience to just laws, and participation in civic life, but it does not own the conscience, the soul, or our ultimate loyalty. The coin Jesus referenced bore Caesar’s image. Human beings bear the image of God. Our worship, moral convictions, character, and eternal destiny belong to Him. When cultural expectations, political pressures, or personal convenience conflict with God’s commandments, we must remember which authority is highest. This does not require hostility toward government or withdrawal from society. It requires wisdom to distinguish civic obligation from spiritual surrender.

Applying this principle today means being both a responsible citizen and a faithful disciple. Pay what you owe. Keep your commitments. Respect the rights of others. Participate thoughtfully in your community. At the same time, do not allow any political party, leader, institution, or movement to replace God as the source of your moral compass. Earthly authority has limits, but truth does not. Christlike living means honoring legitimate authority while reserving our deepest loyalty, worship, and obedience for Jesus Christ.

Commentary:

We are naturally drawn to what is large, dramatic, and immediately visible. We may think meaningful change requires extraordinary talent, influence, wealth, or opportunity. Yet God repeatedly works through what appears small. A quiet prayer, a difficult apology, a few minutes in Scripture, one honest decision, one act of service, one step toward repentance. These things may seem insignificant in the moment, but when placed in God’s hands, small and simple acts can become the beginning of something far greater than we can presently see.

Jesus taught that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. The power is not found in the physical size of the seed, but in the life God has placed within it. A seed does not become a tree overnight. It grows through light, nourishment, patience, and time. Faith grows much the same way. We exercise it through repeated choices to trust God when circumstances are uncertain. Freedom itself is preserved by this same principle. Strong families, honest communities, and righteous nations are built through countless individual decisions to choose truth, responsibility, courage, and goodness when no one is watching.

Never underestimate what God can accomplish through one faithful decision today. You may not see the mountain move immediately, but obedience plants something eternal into the soil of your life. As we faithfully do the small things Christ has asked of us, we gradually become more like Him and more capable of accomplishing the great purposes He has prepared for us.

Commentary:

Scripture warns that the day of the Lord will come “as a thief in the night.” A thief does not announce his arrival or schedule an appointment. The point is not that Christ comes with evil intent, but that His coming will be unexpected to those who are spiritually asleep. God has given us enough light to know that the day will come, while withholding the hour so that our discipleship is built on faithfulness rather than calculation.

Preparedness is one of the great principles of both spiritual life and freedom. A wise family prepares before hardship arrives. A responsible citizen protects liberty before it is threatened. A faithful disciple strengthens character before temptation appears. We do not wait until the storm begins to repair the roof. In the same way, repentance, prayer, service, and obedience are not emergency measures. They are daily habits that keep the soul ready to stand before God.

The Lord has given us agency, which means we decide each day what kind of person we are becoming. Readiness for Christ is not primarily about storing supplies, predicting dates, or living anxiously. It is about having our hearts in order. Are we forgiving? Are we honest? Are we keeping our covenants and commitments? Are we serving those around us? When we live each day as though Christ could come, we become less distracted by what is temporary and more devoted to what is eternal. True preparedness leads us to live awake, accountable, and Christlike.

Commentary:

It is easy to recognize another person’s shortcomings. Their impatience, pride, poor judgment, or inconsistency can seem obvious to us, while our own weaknesses remain strangely difficult to see. Christ warned against this tendency with the vivid image of someone trying to remove a tiny speck from another person’s eye while a beam obstructs his own. His teaching is not a command to ignore right and wrong. It is a command to approach truth with humility.

Self-government begins with self-examination. We cannot preserve freedom merely by demanding virtue from everyone around us. Freedom requires men and women willing to govern their own appetites, admit their own errors, and repent when conscience and God reveal something that must change. Like a mirror, honest reflection does not create the blemish. It simply allows us to see what was already there. The mature response is not to break the mirror, but to make the correction.

This principle also changes how we deal with others. When we have wrestled honestly with our own weaknesses, we become less eager to condemn and better prepared to help. Humility does not weaken moral conviction. It purifies it. Before correcting a spouse, child, neighbor, coworker, or fellow citizen, we should first ask whether the same standard has been applied faithfully to ourselves. That kind of personal accountability produces both stronger character and greater compassion, drawing us toward the humility, mercy, and righteousness of Christ.

Commentary:

There is something sacred about the purity of a child. Children are not perfect, but they often possess qualities adulthood can slowly wear away: humility, dependence, sincerity, wonder, and a willingness to believe. The Savior did not treat these qualities as weaknesses. He pointed to them as characteristics of His kingdom. In a world that often celebrates sophistication, power, and self-sufficiency, Christ placed a child in the center and taught His followers to look again at what greatness truly means.

When people brought little children to Jesus, His disciples rebuked them. Perhaps they thought they were protecting the Savior’s time or attending to more important matters. Jesus corrected them. Children were not an interruption to His ministry. Caring for them was part of His ministry. His response reveals a moral responsibility that reaches far beyond one moment in Scripture. Adults possess greater knowledge, authority, and freedom than children, and therefore carry a greater duty to protect rather than exploit, teach rather than corrupt, and strengthen rather than manipulate. Freedom itself survives only when one generation accepts responsibility for the innocence and moral formation of the next.

Christ’s tenderness toward children should also cause us to examine what we place before them, what examples we set, and what kind of world our choices are building. Their trust is sacred stewardship. Their innocence should never be treated casually, and their dependence should never become an opportunity for selfishness or abuse. To welcome a child, protect a child, teach a child truth, and preserve space for faith and goodness to grow is deeply Christlike living.
