“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” — John 7:24
“God does not ask us to abandon judgment, but to refine it until it reflects truth, mercy, and light.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Christ’s teaching to “judge not” is often misunderstood as a call to avoid discernment altogether. Yet in John 7:24, He commands us to “judge righteous judgment.” This reveals a higher standard, not a lower one. We are not meant to turn off moral clarity, but to align it with divine truth. Just as a compass must be calibrated to point true north, our judgment must be guided by God’s laws rather than personal bias or cultural pressure.
Righteous judgment begins with humility. It asks not, “How do I compare to others?” but “Am I aligned with what is right?” Unrighteous judgment condemns to elevate self. Righteous judgment discerns to protect truth and uplift others. Like a skilled builder who measures carefully before cutting, a wise disciple pauses, seeks understanding, and considers both justice and mercy before forming conclusions.
In a world that often confuses tolerance with virtue and truth with offense, disciples of Christ are called to stand steady. This does not mean harshness or self-righteousness, but clarity anchored in love. Christ Himself judged sin clearly while offering grace freely. To follow Him is to see people as souls of infinite worth while still recognizing the difference between right and wrong. That balance is the essence of Christlike living.
Scripture:
“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” — John 7:24
Daily Application:
Examine one judgment you’ve recently made about someone and ask, “Was this guided by truth and love?” Adjust your perspective if needed.
