“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you…” — Matthew 5:44
“True discipleship is proven not by how we love the faithful, but by how we love those who walk away.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
It is easy to love those who believe as we do, who speak our language of faith and walk beside us in unity. The real test comes when someone mocks what we hold sacred, ridicules our convictions, or chooses to leave the path altogether. In those moments, the natural man wants to withdraw, defend, or even harden. Yet Christ calls us to something higher. He loved not only the devoted, but also the doubting, the denying, and even those who crucified Him.
Loving in these situations does not mean agreeing with falsehood or abandoning truth. It means separating the eternal worth of a soul from the choices they are making. Just as a parent does not stop loving a child who rebels, we are not justified in withdrawing love from those who step away from faith. Agency is a divine gift, and God allows each person to choose their path. Our role is not to control that path, but to remain a steady example of grace, truth, and unwavering charity.
Think of a lighthouse standing firm on a rocky shore. It does not chase the ships lost in the storm, nor does it dim its light when ignored. It simply shines, constant and clear, offering guidance to any who are willing to see. In the same way, we are called to hold our light without resentment or fear. When we love those who mock or leave, we reflect Christ’s patience and mercy, creating space for hearts to soften over time. This is the quiet strength of Christlike living.
Scripture:
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you…” — Matthew 5:44
Daily Application:
Reach out to someone who has distanced themselves from faith and show simple, genuine kindness without agenda.
