Daily Devotional - August 13th, 2026
“Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.” — Matthew 22:21

Commentary:
When Jesus was asked whether it was lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, He answered with remarkable clarity: give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God. His words teach both responsibility and proper order. We live within communities and nations that require laws, taxes, civic duties, and respect for legitimate authority. Christians should not treat these obligations lightly. Honesty, responsibility, and respect for law are part of living with integrity. Freedom cannot endure when citizens demand its blessings while refusing its responsibilities.
But Christ’s answer also establishes an essential boundary. Government may rightly ask for taxes, obedience to just laws, and participation in civic life, but it does not own the conscience, the soul, or our ultimate loyalty. The coin Jesus referenced bore Caesar’s image. Human beings bear the image of God. Our worship, moral convictions, character, and eternal destiny belong to Him. When cultural expectations, political pressures, or personal convenience conflict with God’s commandments, we must remember which authority is highest. This does not require hostility toward government or withdrawal from society. It requires wisdom to distinguish civic obligation from spiritual surrender.
Applying this principle today means being both a responsible citizen and a faithful disciple. Pay what you owe. Keep your commitments. Respect the rights of others. Participate thoughtfully in your community. At the same time, do not allow any political party, leader, institution, or movement to replace God as the source of your moral compass. Earthly authority has limits, but truth does not. Christlike living means honoring legitimate authority while reserving our deepest loyalty, worship, and obedience for Jesus Christ.
