“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19
“The way we care for what God has entrusted to us reveals the gratitude we have for the Giver."” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Our bodies are more than tools for work or vessels for pleasure. They are sacred gifts, entrusted to us for a divine purpose. Just as we would never casually neglect a house of worship, we should not neglect the body that God designed to carry our minds, our spirits, and our ability to serve others. Caring for our health is not about vanity or chasing the world’s standards. It is about stewardship. God grants us agency, and every choice we make with food, rest, exercise, and self-control either strengthens or weakens our ability to fulfill His purposes.
A well-maintained temple stands ready to welcome worshippers through every season. A neglected building eventually limits what can happen within its walls. The same principle applies to our lives. When we choose discipline over indulgence, we gain greater freedom to work, to serve our families, to help our neighbors, and to answer God’s call. Freedom is preserved through wise choices, not careless ones. The habits we build today shape the opportunities we will have tomorrow.
Christ never taught selfishness, but He also never taught neglect. He withdrew to rest, walked great distances in ministry, fasted with purpose, and lived with perfect discipline. Following Him means honoring every gift He has entrusted to us, including our physical bodies, so they remain instruments for His work.
Scripture:
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Daily Application:
Choose one habit today that honors your body, whether taking a walk, eating nourishing food, drinking more water, getting adequate rest, or setting aside something you know weakens your self-control. Offer that choice to God as an act of gratitude.
