Daily Devotional - August 8th, 2026

Commentary:
There is something sacred about the purity of a child. Children are not perfect, but they often possess qualities adulthood can slowly wear away: humility, dependence, sincerity, wonder, and a willingness to believe. The Savior did not treat these qualities as weaknesses. He pointed to them as characteristics of His kingdom. In a world that often celebrates sophistication, power, and self-sufficiency, Christ placed a child in the center and taught His followers to look again at what greatness truly means.
When people brought little children to Jesus, His disciples rebuked them. Perhaps they thought they were protecting the Savior’s time or attending to more important matters. Jesus corrected them. Children were not an interruption to His ministry. Caring for them was part of His ministry. His response reveals a moral responsibility that reaches far beyond one moment in Scripture. Adults possess greater knowledge, authority, and freedom than children, and therefore carry a greater duty to protect rather than exploit, teach rather than corrupt, and strengthen rather than manipulate. Freedom itself survives only when one generation accepts responsibility for the innocence and moral formation of the next.
Christ’s tenderness toward children should also cause us to examine what we place before them, what examples we set, and what kind of world our choices are building. Their trust is sacred stewardship. Their innocence should never be treated casually, and their dependence should never become an opportunity for selfishness or abuse. To welcome a child, protect a child, teach a child truth, and preserve space for faith and goodness to grow is deeply Christlike living.

Protect a child's innocence today through your words, example, attention, or encouragement, and consider whether your influence is helping that child draw closer to what is true, good, and holy.
