“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Repentance is not the erasing of who you were but the reclaiming of who you were meant to be.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
As the calendar turns, many feel the quiet weight of past labels. Some were spoken over us by others. Some we chose through repeated mistakes. Scripture teaches that repentance is more than regret; it is a decisive change of mind and direction. When we repent, we do not merely apologize to God. We agree with Him about truth, and we choose to walk forward in it. Freedom begins when we stop defending the old self and start trusting the new life God offers.
Think of repentance like clearing a field before spring. The soil may still be rich, but weeds choke future growth if they remain. Old identities behave the same way. They crowd out faith, dull courage, and excuse patterns that no longer fit a redeemed heart. God never asks us to carry yesterday into tomorrow. He asks us to lay it down. This is not self-rejection. It is obedience rooted in hope. The law of the harvest still stands. What we plant today shapes what we live tomorrow.
As we approach a new year, repentance becomes a sacred act of agency. We choose truth over habit, humility over pride, and light over comfort. Christ did not die to improve our excuses. He died to transform our nature. When we turn from sin and step into obedience, we honor His sacrifice and live as people made free to choose righteousness. This is Christlike living: walking forward unburdened, honest before God, and willing to be made new.
