“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
“We cannot step into a new season while insisting on wearing yesterday’s costume.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
As a new year dawns, we often talk about new goals while quietly clinging to old identities. These identities may not be sinful on the surface, but they can still limit us. Labels like who we used to be, what we failed at, or what others once called us can quietly dictate our choices. God does not redeem us so we can carry our past like a badge. He redeems us so we can walk forward unburdened, accountable, and free. Renewal requires intention. Freedom requires release. This is the posture of a heart learning to live as Christ lived.
Being born again is not meant to be a single moment filed away in memory. It is meant to be a way of life. Just as the body needs daily nourishment, the soul needs frequent renewal. Prayer is where old identities loosen their grip and grace is reapplied. When we kneel before God, we are reminded that our truest identity is not earned, defended, or inherited from the world. It is received. Seeking grace daily does not signal weakness. It demonstrates humility and trust, which are essential traits of Christlike living.
Old identities often promise safety but deliver stagnation. They keep us rehearsing former victories or reliving former wounds. Christ invites us to something better. He calls us to take responsibility for who we are becoming, not who we were. This kind of renewal strengthens families, communities, and nations because it begins with individuals choosing moral clarity and spiritual discipline. Leaving behind what held us back allows us to walk in truth, serve with courage, and love with conviction, which is the mark of a life patterned after Christ.
