“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world”
“Freedom flourishes where the soul has learned to rule itself.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Self-governance is not merely a political concept. It is a divine principle written into the fabric of creation. From the beginning, God granted humanity agency, the power to choose light or darkness, obedience or rebellion. That gift carries responsibility. A nation cannot remain free if its people are ruled by impulse, resentment, or appetite. In the same way, a life cannot prosper if the heart has no discipline. Liberty without self-control collapses into chaos, just as a ship without a rudder drifts wherever the current pulls.
The laws of God are not chains that restrict us; they are guardrails that preserve our freedom. When a person governs his temper, curbs his desires, and orders his priorities according to truth, he becomes steady and trustworthy. Consider a well-tended garden. Without daily care, weeds quickly overtake what was planted with intention. The human heart is no different. Self-governance requires vigilance, humility, and submission to higher law. It is not harsh self-condemnation but faithful self-direction.
In a free society, external laws can only do so much. The strength of a people rises or falls on internal restraint. When we choose honesty over convenience, patience over anger, and diligence over laziness, we strengthen not only our character but the moral foundation of our communities. Christ demonstrated perfect self-governance. He acted not from impulse, but from obedience to the Father. To follow Him is to discipline our will so that it aligns with divine purpose.
