“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:” — Philippians 3:20
“When we remember where our true citizenship lies, we live more responsibly where our feet stand.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Scripture teaches that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven, yet our daily assignment is here on earth. That truth anchors both our hope and our duty. A dual citizen honors the laws of both nations he belongs to, but he never forgets which passport defines his identity. As believers, heaven defines our identity, while earth defines our stewardship. We are ambassadors of a higher kingdom, entrusted with responsibilities in this one.
Citizenship in heaven does not excuse us from earthly responsibility. It deepens it. A builder who knows the structure belongs to someone else works with greater care, not less. This world is God’s creation. Our communities, families, and freedoms are sacred trusts. Faithful citizenship means we vote our conscience, work with integrity, raise our families with moral clarity, and stand for truth with humility. Freedom is sustained when individuals govern themselves according to divine law. Without personal responsibility, liberty erodes from within.
When we forget heaven, we become consumed with temporary battles. When we forget earth, we drift into passive spirituality. Christ calls us to both devotion and diligence. He prayed for His followers not to be taken out of the world, but to be protected within it. That balance forms mature disciples. We carry heaven’s values into earthly action. We defend what is good not from fear, but from conviction. Living this way reflects the character of Christ, who walked faithfully on earth while remaining perfectly aligned with the Father.
