“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18
“Gratitude does not ignore life's burdens. It reminds us that God has already provided reasons to keep walking in faith.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Gratitude is more than good manners. It is a discipline that shapes the heart and steadies the mind. When we intentionally thank God for His blessings, we shift our focus from what is missing to what He has faithfully supplied. Just as a compass keeps a traveler pointed in the right direction despite changing terrain, gratitude keeps our hearts oriented toward truth even when circumstances become difficult. It protects us from the discouragement that grows when we dwell only on problems.
A grateful heart also strengthens freedom. People who recognize God’s blessings are less likely to become captive to envy, resentment, or fear. Gratitude reminds us that every good gift comes from the Lord and that our greatest treasures are often the ones money cannot buy: faith, family, forgiveness, purpose, and hope. When we acknowledge these gifts, we become more willing to serve others and to use our blessings responsibly.
Christ demonstrated perfect gratitude throughout His earthly ministry, giving thanks to the Father even before miracles unfolded and before enduring the cross. Following His example teaches us that thanksgiving is not merely a response to favorable circumstances but an expression of unwavering trust in God’s goodness. A grateful heart reflects the character of Christ.
