“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” — James 4:14
“The uncertainty of life's final moment is not meant to frighten us. It is meant to remind us that every ordinary day carries eternal significance.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
None of us knows the day or the hour when our earthly journey will end. We make plans for tomorrow, next year, and retirement, yet every heartbeat is ultimately a gift entrusted to us by God. That truth is not a reason for fear. It is an invitation to live with purpose, gratitude, and clean hands before the Lord. When we remember that time is precious, we stop postponing what matters most. We forgive sooner, love more deeply, and choose integrity even when no one is watching.
Imagine boarding a flight without knowing the exact arrival time. A wise traveler keeps their belongings in order, stays attentive, and is prepared when the announcement comes. Life is much the same. We cannot control when God calls us home, but we can choose the condition of our hearts each day. Freedom is not merely the ability to choose our path. It is the responsibility to choose what is right while the opportunity remains. Moral law reminds us that today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s legacy, whether our days are many or few.
Jesus never taught His followers to live in panic about death. He taught them to remain faithful, watchful, and full of hope. A life surrendered to Christ is not consumed by wondering when the journey will end but by making every step count for His kingdom. That is the quiet confidence of Christlike living.
Scripture:
“Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” — James 4:13-15
Daily Application:
Examine your heart today. If there is a relationship to restore, a sin to confess, gratitude to express, or a kindness to offer, do not delay. Live today in a way that you would be at peace if it were your last.
