Daily Devotional - July 20th, 2026
“Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did, with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength...” — 2 Kings 23:25

Commentary:
King Hezekiah and King Josiah inherited kingdoms shaped by years of compromise, idolatry, and spiritual neglect. Their fathers and grandfathers had led Judah away from God, leaving behind broken altars, neglected worship, and a discouraged people. Yet neither king allowed the failures of those before them to become an excuse for inaction. Instead, they accepted responsibility for the day they had been given. They reopened the temple, restored true worship, removed idols, and called the people back to the covenant of the Lord.
The same principle applies to every generation. We do not choose the family we are born into, the culture we inherit, or the mistakes others make before us. We do choose what we will build from this day forward. A farmer cannot change the weather from last season, but he can prepare today’s soil for tomorrow’s harvest. Likewise, freedom is preserved when people refuse to surrender to the belief that decline is inevitable. Moral courage begins with the decision that truth is worth restoring, even when error has become familiar.
God honors those who stop repeating destructive patterns and begin establishing righteous ones. Whether the brokenness comes from a family, a community, or a nation, renewal always starts with individuals who are willing to obey God regardless of history. Hezekiah and Josiah remind us that repentance is stronger than tradition, and faithfulness is more powerful than inheritance. Their example points us to Jesus Christ, who makes all things new and invites every willing heart to become an instrument of restoration.

Daily Application:
Identify one unhealthy habit, lingering resentment, or compromised practice that has been passed down or accepted as "just the way things are." Prayerfully replace it today with one deliberate act of obedience that honors God and strengthens those who will follow after you.
