“But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” — Luke 10:42
“The condition of our heart matters more than the condition of our checklist.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
When Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha, both women loved Him. Martha expressed her devotion through diligent service, while Mary chose to sit at His feet and listen. Neither hospitality nor hard work is unimportant, but Christ gently reminded Martha that anxiety over many good things can distract us from the one thing that is essential. A full schedule is not always a fulfilled soul.
Life often resembles Martha’s kitchen. There are responsibilities to manage, people to serve, and problems demanding immediate attention. Like tending a garden, constant work without stopping to nourish the soil eventually produces weaker fruit. Our spiritual lives follow the same pattern. When we neglect time with the Savior, even worthwhile efforts can become burdens instead of blessings. True freedom is found when our priorities are governed by eternal principles rather than endless demands.
Mary understood that before we can effectively serve Christ, we must first learn from Him. His words shape our character, calm our fears, and align our desires with God’s will. Service that flows from discipleship becomes joyful rather than exhausting. As we place Christ first, we discover that the better part is not doing more, but becoming more like Him.
