“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” — Galatians 5:1
“Freedom endures when courageous hearts recognize that liberty is a sacred trust before it is a political privilege.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The Constitution did not appear by accident. It emerged during a remarkable season in history when men of conviction wrestled with timeless principles of justice, human dignity, and the proper limits of earthly power. While they were imperfect, many believed they were accountable to a higher authority than kings or governments. They understood that rights are not granted by rulers but endowed by God, and that civil government exists to protect those rights rather than replace them.
Freedom has always required courage. Every generation benefits from sacrifices made by those who chose principle over comfort. Like a family that plants shade trees whose fruit they may never enjoy, those who sought liberty accepted hardship so future generations could live with greater hope. Their willingness to defend justice reminds us that blessings are rarely preserved by good intentions alone. They are sustained by moral character, personal responsibility, and a steadfast commitment to truth.
The Constitution continues to matter because it reflects enduring principles that honor agency, restrain the concentration of power, and recognize the worth of every individual. Documents alone, however, cannot preserve a free people. A constitution is much like the foundation of a home. It provides strength and stability, but the people living within the home must choose honesty, self-discipline, charity, and virtue if it is to remain secure. As we remember those who courageously sought liberty and justice, we also remember that true freedom reaches its highest purpose when it leads us to serve God and love our neighbors. We honor both their sacrifice and our Savior by living as disciples who use our freedom to choose righteousness.
Scripture:
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” — Galatians 5:1
Daily Application:
Reflect on one freedom you often take for granted, then express gratitude for it through prayer and use that freedom today to bless someone else with an act of kindness, service, or encouragement.
