“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” — Matthew 25:13
“Preparation is quiet faith made visible before the moment of testing arrives.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The parable of the wise and foolish virgins reminds us that some things cannot be borrowed at the last minute. When the bridegroom finally came, all ten had lamps, but only five had prepared enough oil to keep their light burning. The difference was not appearance, intention, or invitation. The difference was preparation. The wise understood that the future belongs to those who faithfully prepare today, even when no one is watching.
We often prepare for life’s important moments. We save for retirement, study before an exam, and practice before a performance. No reasonable person expects a harvest without planting seed first. Our spiritual lives follow the same eternal law. Daily prayer, sincere repentance, scripture study, and obedience are like adding oil to our lamps one drop at a time. These quiet acts may seem small, but they build a reservoir of faith that sustains us when darkness comes and when the Bridegroom appears.
The world often encourages us to wait until tomorrow, assuming there will always be another opportunity. The Savior teaches the opposite. Readiness is not built in a single dramatic moment but through consistent discipleship. Agency is one of God’s greatest gifts, and each day we choose whether to fill our lamps or neglect them. The invitation is not to live in fear of Christ’s return, but to live with joyful expectation, knowing that faithful preparation brings confidence instead of panic. As we choose daily obedience over occasional enthusiasm, we become people who are ready to welcome the Bridegroom with peace, hope, and Christlike faith.
Scripture:
“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” — Matthew 25:13
Daily Application:
Choose one spiritual habit to strengthen today. Spend ten uninterrupted minutes in prayer or scripture study, then identify one act of obedience or service that adds another drop of oil to your lamp before the day ends.
