“And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?” — 1 Mark 2:16
“Christ did not lower the standard to reach sinners. He brought His presence to where hearts could be changed.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Jesus was often criticized, not because He ignored sin, but because He refused to ignore sinners. The religious leaders looked at the guest list. Jesus looked at the condition of the heart. They saw guilt that deserved distance. He saw souls that needed an invitation. A physician does not wait for the sick to become healthy before entering the room. In the same way, Christ entered homes where broken lives could encounter hope.
There is an important lesson in that example. Love is not approval, and compassion is not compromise. A lighthouse does not become part of the storm by standing in it. It remains firmly anchored while offering direction to those in danger. Christ demonstrated perfect holiness while extending perfect mercy. His presence called people upward, not downward. Many who sat at His table rose with a new desire to leave their old lives behind because they had encountered truth wrapped in love.
Our world often pushes us toward one of two extremes: harsh judgment or careless acceptance. Jesus chose neither. He offered both truth and grace, showing that God’s moral law is never abandoned, yet His invitation to repentance is always open. When we follow His example, we become people who welcome others without abandoning conviction, extending mercy while pointing faithfully toward righteousness. This is the heart of Christlike living.
Scripture:
“And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” — 1 Mark 2:16-17
