"Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee." — Matthew 20:13-14
"God’s rewards are not wages for human effort alone; they are gifts flowing from divine grace." — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
In Jesus’ parable of the laborers in the vineyard, those hired at the eleventh hour received the same wage as those who had worked since morning. At first glance, it feels unfair. Our natural instinct is to measure reward by hours worked, effort expended, and results achieved. Yet Christ was teaching a higher principle. The kingdom of God operates not merely on the mathematics of merit, but on the generosity of grace.
Many of life’s blessings cannot be earned in the strict sense. A child does not earn a parent’s love. A citizen does not create the freedoms secured by previous generations. In the same way, salvation is not a paycheck issued for perfect performance. It is a gift offered by a loving Father. The workers who arrived late were not rewarded because they had done more, but because the master was good. His generosity did not diminish the reward of the first laborers. Their mistake was comparing their blessing to someone else’s.
This principle invites humility. Some come to faith early in life, carrying the burdens and responsibilities of discipleship for decades. Others arrive after years of wandering and regret. Yet when they sincerely turn to Christ, they receive the same invitation into God’s family. The lesson is not that effort is unimportant, but that grace is greater than effort. Rather than resent another person’s blessing, we can rejoice that God’s mercy remains available until the very end. A grateful heart celebrates the goodness of the Master instead of calculating who received more. Such a perspective helps us reflect the generous and forgiving character of Jesus Christ.
Scripture:
"But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee." — Matthew 20:13-14
Daily Application:
Celebrate someone else’s blessing today without comparing it to your own circumstances, and thank God for the grace He has shown you.
