"Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof." — 1 Kings 3:27
“True wisdom does not force a choice between right and wrong. It reveals which heart is willing to sacrifice for what is right.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
King Solomon’s judgment between the two women claiming the same child is one of Scripture’s most remarkable examples of wisdom. Faced with conflicting testimony and no witnesses, Solomon proposed a solution so startling that it exposed the truth hidden beneath the surface. The false claimant was willing to see the child divided, while the true mother would rather surrender her rights than see her son harmed. In a single moment, Solomon uncovered what no argument could reveal: the condition of each woman’s heart.
Life often presents similar situations. Facts matter, but motives matter too. A tree is known by its fruit, and character is often revealed when personal interests collide with moral responsibility. Just as pressure reveals weaknesses in a bridge, difficult circumstances reveal what truly governs our decisions. Freedom depends on this principle. A free people cannot rely solely on laws and institutions. They must cultivate virtue, self-restraint, and a willingness to place truth above self-interest.
The mother’s love reflected a divine pattern. She chose sacrifice over possession and the child’s welfare over her own claims. This mirrors the spirit of Christ, who consistently placed the needs of others above His own comfort and rights. Wisdom is not merely intelligence or cleverness. It is the ability to discern eternal principles and act according to them. Christlike living requires both truth and love working together.
Scripture:
"Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof." — 1 Kings 3:27
Daily Application:
Examine one disagreement or conflict in your life today and ask yourself, "Am I seeking to win, or am I seeking what is right?" Choose one action that prioritizes truth, peace, or another person's well-being above personal advantage.
