"For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth." — 1 Kings 17:14
“God's miracles often begin where our calculations end.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
During a devastating famine, a widow gathering sticks outside the city gate was preparing what she believed would be her final meal. With only a handful of flour and a little oil remaining, she intended to feed herself and her son before facing the uncertainty ahead. Then Elijah arrived with an unexpected request: make him a small cake first. Human reasoning would have resisted. Every instinct for survival would have argued against giving away what little remained. Yet the widow chose faith over fear, and obedience over scarcity.
This account teaches a principle as relevant today as it was centuries ago. Fear focuses on what is leaving our hands, while faith focuses on who holds our future. Many people wait until they have abundance before they trust God, but God often invites us to trust Him while resources appear insufficient. A farmer plants seed before seeing the harvest. A builder lays a foundation before seeing the finished home. Likewise, faith acts on God’s promises before visible evidence appears.
Freedom itself depends on this principle. A person governed by fear becomes captive to circumstances. A person governed by faith remains free to choose what is right regardless of circumstances. The widow’s decision was not reckless optimism. It was confidence that God’s word was more reliable than her immediate circumstances. As she exercised her agency to obey, God multiplied what she could never have multiplied herself. The flour did not run out, and the oil did not fail. This reflects the heart of Christ, who taught that those who seek first God’s kingdom discover that their deepest needs are supplied according to His wisdom.
Scripture:
"For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth." — 1 Kings 17:14
Daily Application:
Give something today that fear would tell you to hold back. It may be your time, encouragement, service, generosity, or trust. Take one step of faith before you see the outcome.
