"Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him." — Job 13:15
“When the storm strips away comfort, it reveals whether our trust was in the gifts or in the Giver.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The story of Job is one of the clearest examples of temptation and testing in all scripture. Satan claimed that Job was faithful only because he was blessed. He argued that if Job lost his possessions, health, and security, he would turn against God. The temptation was not merely to endure suffering. It was the temptation to abandon faith when circumstances no longer seemed fair.
Many people assume freedom means having no hardships, but true freedom is the ability to choose righteousness regardless of hardship. A tree’s roots are not tested on sunny days. They are tested when the wind pushes against them. In the same way, our character is revealed when life becomes difficult. Job teaches us that faith is not a transaction with God. It is a covenant. We do not serve Him because everything goes our way. We serve Him because He is worthy of our trust.
Job’s trials also remind us that not every struggle is a punishment. Sometimes God allows challenges to refine us, strengthen us, and deepen our dependence upon Him. Just as gold is purified by fire, our souls are strengthened through adversity when we remain faithful. Though Job did not understand everything happening around him, he chose humility over bitterness and trust over rebellion. That choice reflects the heart of Christlike living.
Scripture:
"Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him." — Job 13:15
Daily Application:
Choose one current challenge in your life and thank God for the opportunity to grow through it. Then pray specifically for strength to remain faithful rather than simply asking for the challenge to be removed.
