“Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” — John 9:3
“God is often less concerned with assigning blame for our trials than revealing His purpose through them.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
When Jesus and His disciples encountered a man who had been blind from birth, the disciples immediately asked a question many people still ask today: “Who caused this?” They wanted to know whether the man had sinned or whether his parents were responsible. Their assumption was that suffering must always be traced to someone’s fault. Jesus redirected their thinking entirely. He answered that neither was the cause, but that “the works of God should be made manifest in him.”
Human nature often searches for someone to blame. We do it in families, communities, and even in our own hearts. When difficulties arise, we can become trapped looking backward instead of looking upward. It is like a sailor caught in a storm who spends all his energy arguing about where the wind came from while neglecting to raise the sails. The source of the challenge may matter far less than how we respond to it.
This principle is closely tied to agency and faith. God does not promise a life free from hardship, but He does promise opportunities to grow, serve, and witness His power. Sometimes our greatest limitations become the very place where His light shines brightest. The blind man received not only physical sight but also spiritual understanding. His trial became a testimony. Freedom is not found in escaping every difficulty. It is found in choosing a faithful response to the circumstances before us. As disciples of Christ, we learn to stop asking only, “Whose fault is this?” and begin asking, “How can God be glorified through this?”

Daily Application:
Replace one complaint or question of blame today with a prayer asking God to show you His purpose and what faithful action you can take right now.
