And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet. — Mark 11:13
“God is not looking for the appearance of righteousness. He is looking for the evidence of a transformed life.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
One of the most sobering moments in Christ’s ministry is His encounter with the barren fig tree. From a distance, the tree appeared healthy and productive, covered with leaves that promised fruit. Yet when Jesus approached, He found nothing to nourish Him. In response, He cursed the tree, and it withered away. This was more than a lesson about agriculture. It was a living parable about spiritual authenticity.
Leaves are easy to grow. They are visible, attractive, and impressive from a distance. Fruit is different. Fruit requires deep roots, nourishment, patience, and genuine life. The fig tree represented those who displayed outward signs of faith while lacking the inward substance God desires. It is possible to attend church, speak religious language, and maintain a respectable image while neglecting the weightier matters of obedience, charity, humility, and repentance. A fruitless tree may look alive, but it fails its purpose.
The principle extends beyond religion. A nation thrives when its citizens produce integrity, responsibility, and virtue. A family flourishes when love is demonstrated through action, not merely words. Freedom itself survives only when people bear the fruits of self-government and moral discipline. God has given each of us talents, opportunities, and stewardship. He expects growth, not perfection, but growth nonetheless. Christ’s warning through the fig tree reminds us that appearances cannot substitute for genuine discipleship.
The good news is that Jesus does not merely inspect the tree; He also nourishes it. Through His grace, He enables us to produce the fruits of the Spirit and become what we could never become on our own. A fruitful life is ultimately the result of abiding in Him and following His example.
