"And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness." — Exodus 16:2
“The miracle that saves us today can become the memory we neglect tomorrow if gratitude is not guarded.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
One of the most sobering patterns in scripture is how quickly people can forget what God has done for them. The children of Israel witnessed extraordinary miracles. They saw plagues break Pharaoh’s power, walked through the Red Sea on dry ground, and watched their enemies disappear beneath the waters. Yet only days later, their voices turned from praise to complaint. The God who had delivered them from centuries of bondage was suddenly questioned because of thirst, hunger, or uncertainty about the future.
Human nature has not changed much. We pray fervently for deliverance during a crisis, but once the storm passes, our focus often shifts from God’s faithfulness to our next inconvenience. It is like a traveler who survives a dangerous mountain pass only to spend the rest of the journey complaining about the dust on the road. The greater miracle fades behind the smaller discomfort. Gratitude weakens, and entitlement quietly takes its place.
The lesson is not merely about ancient Israel. It is about every heart that has experienced God’s mercy. Whether He has healed a relationship, provided employment, protected a family, or forgiven a repentant soul, the temptation remains to forget the hand that rescued us when new challenges arise. Faith remembers. Faith looks backward at God’s proven character before it looks forward at present difficulties. A grateful heart sees today’s problems through the lens of yesterday’s deliverance. This kind of remembrance helps us walk in the spirit of Christ, trusting the Father even when the next step is unclear.
Scripture:
"And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness." — Exodus 16:2
Daily Application:
Record one miracle, answered prayer, or act of God's provision from your past, and thank Him specifically for it today. Let remembrance strengthen your trust for whatever challenge stands before you now.
