"When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." — Mark 2:17
“Jesus did not wait for people to become worthy before sitting with them; His presence was part of what made transformation possible.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
One of the most remarkable scenes in the Gospels is Jesus eating with sinners. In His day, sharing a meal was more than a casual act. It signaled fellowship, acceptance, and relationship. Religious leaders criticized Him for sitting with tax collectors and outcasts, but Jesus saw what they missed. He understood that people are changed not by rejection, but by truth and grace working together.
A physician does not avoid the sick, and a shepherd does not abandon lost sheep. Likewise, Christ entered the lives of broken people without compromising His holiness. He did not endorse sin, but He refused to let sin have the final word over a person’s identity. His willingness to sit at the table with sinners demonstrated that God’s mercy reaches farther than human judgment. Freedom begins when we recognize that repentance is not a barrier to God’s love but a response to it.
The same principle applies today. A lighthouse does not become less pure by shining into a storm. It fulfills its purpose by guiding others safely home. As followers of Christ, we are called to hold firmly to truth while extending compassion to those who struggle. We reflect the Savior most clearly when we invite others toward redemption rather than pushing them further into darkness. This is the heart of Christlike living.
