"And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all... " — Luke 21:3-4
“Heaven measures sacrifice by the heart that gives, not by the amount that is seen.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The account of the widow’s mite teaches a truth that often runs against the grain of the world’s standards. Society tends to celebrate the largest donation, the biggest achievement, or the most visible contribution. Yet Christ looked beyond the outward amount and saw the inward sacrifice. The widow gave two small coins, but she also gave her trust. Her offering represented faith in God’s provision and confidence that obedience mattered more than personal comfort.
Freedom and responsibility are inseparable principles. Just as a nation remains strong when citizens willingly contribute to the common good, a soul grows strong when it willingly offers its best to God. The widow was not compelled by force or recognition. She exercised moral agency and chose generosity. Like a farmer planting seed that seems small compared to the size of the field, she understood that value is found not merely in quantity but in purpose. God sees the unseen motives behind every act of service, every quiet kindness, and every sacrifice made without applause.
Many people underestimate what they can contribute because they compare themselves to others. The widow’s example reminds us that God does not ask us to match another person’s resources, talents, or opportunities. He asks us to be faithful with what we have. Whether it is time, encouragement, service, or material blessings, the offering becomes sacred when it is given with love and trust. This perspective invites us to live with gratitude rather than comparison and with stewardship rather than fear. Such faith-filled giving reflects the selfless character of Jesus Christ, who gave everything for others.
Scripture:
"And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: for all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had." — Luke 21:3-4
Daily Application:
Give something meaningful today that costs you a measure of comfort, convenience, or time, and offer it quietly without seeking recognition.
