“But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.” — Mark 10:43-44
“The strongest leaders lift others before they lift themselves.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The world often defines leadership by authority, status, or recognition. Titles, platforms, and influence are treated as signs of greatness. Yet Christ taught a very different principle. True leadership is measured not by how many people serve you, but by how many people you choose to serve. The greatest leaders are those who quietly shoulder responsibility so others can rise.
Consider the foundation of a building. It carries the entire weight of the structure but is rarely noticed once the building stands tall. Without it, everything above would collapse. Service works the same way. When leaders invest in people, encourage growth, and accept the hard work others avoid, they become the steady foundation that allows families, communities, and institutions to thrive.
Service-centered leadership also preserves freedom. When leaders see their role as stewardship rather than control, they protect the dignity and agency of others. They build trust instead of fear. People naturally follow those who care about them, not those who simply command them. A leader who serves first earns influence that no title alone can create.
Christ demonstrated this principle in the most powerful way possible. Though He held all authority, He knelt to wash the feet of His disciples. In that moment He showed that greatness in God’s kingdom flows downward through humility, not upward through power. Every act of service reflects His example and strengthens the kind of leadership that blesses rather than burdens. Leadership that endures always begins with a servant’s heart. That is the pattern of Christlike living.
