“And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart...” — Deuteronomy 8:2
“The wilderness is not where God abandons us. It is where He prepares us.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Every life includes wilderness seasons. These are the stretches where prayers seem quiet, progress feels slow, and the path ahead looks uncertain. Yet Scripture repeatedly shows that God does some of His most important work in the wilderness. Moses spent forty years there before leading Israel. David fled into the wilderness before becoming king. Even Jesus entered the wilderness before beginning His ministry.
The wilderness strips away distractions. In times of comfort, it is easy to rely on routine, resources, or reputation. But in the wilderness, those supports fade. What remains is the deeper question of trust. Much like a refiner’s fire reveals the purity of gold, the wilderness reveals the condition of our hearts. It exposes pride, strengthens patience, and teaches dependence on the Lord. What feels like delay is often preparation.
Think of a farmer preparing soil before planting. The field may look empty and unproductive for a time, but beneath the surface something essential is happening. The ground is being broken, softened, and made ready for growth. In the same way, God often prepares our character before He expands our responsibility. Freedom, whether personal or national, cannot endure without disciplined hearts and faithful people. The wilderness shapes that kind of character.
When we walk through these seasons with faith instead of resentment, the wilderness becomes sacred ground. It becomes a place where humility grows, courage strengthens, and our trust in God deepens. In this way, even the hardest seasons can move us closer to living with the patience, obedience, and faithfulness that reflect the life of Christ.
Scripture:
“And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.” — Deuteronomy 8:2
Daily Application:
Reflect on a current challenge and ask God what character He may be developing in you through it. Write down one lesson you sense He is teaching and thank Him for the growth.
