“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Ephesians 5:20
“Gratitude grows deepest in the soil of humility, where the heart remembers it is not self-made.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Gratitude is often spoken of as a simple act of saying thanks, but its truest form is born from humility. A humble heart recognizes that life itself is a gift, not an entitlement. Just as a farmer cannot command the rain but gratefully receives it, we too depend on blessings we did not create. When we forget this, pride quietly takes root, convincing us we are the sole authors of our success. Gratitude, anchored in humility, corrects that illusion and brings clarity to our dependence on God.
Freedom flourishes in a humble and grateful soul. When we acknowledge that our abilities, opportunities, and even our daily breath come from a higher source, we are less likely to take them for granted or misuse them. Pride leads to excess and entitlement, but humility invites stewardship and responsibility. A grateful person does not cling tightly to blessings but uses them wisely, recognizing they are entrusted, not owned. This mindset strengthens character and aligns our choices with moral truth.
Jesus Christ exemplified perfect humility, even while possessing all power. He gave thanks continually and served without seeking recognition. When we follow His example, gratitude becomes more than words. It becomes a way of living that softens the heart, lifts the mind, and draws us closer to God. In that sacred space, humility and gratitude work together to shape a life that reflects Christ.
