“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” — Colossians 4:6
“Truth spoken without grace can harden a heart; truth delivered with grace can transform it.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Truth is powerful, but the way it is delivered determines whether it builds or breaks. Many believe that simply stating what is right is enough. Yet God never separates truth from grace. His example shows us that how we speak matters just as much as what we say. When truth is delivered harshly, it often creates resistance. When it is wrapped in grace, it invites reflection and change.
Consider a key and a hammer. Both are made of metal, but only one opens a door. A hammer may forcefully strike, but it cannot unlock what is closed. In the same way, blunt words may express truth, but they rarely open hearts. Grace acts as the key. It softens the approach, respects agency, and creates space for the other person to receive what is being said. If the goal is not merely to be right, but to help someone grow, then delivery becomes essential.
This requires humility and intention. Speaking truth with grace means checking our motives before we speak. Are we trying to win an argument, or are we trying to lift a person? Christ consistently demonstrated this balance. He never compromised truth, yet people were drawn to Him because of the grace with which He spoke. When we follow His example, our words become instruments of healing rather than harm.
