“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
“Power becomes destructive when leaders stop listening to truth.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Pharaoh’s downfall did not begin with the plagues. It began with a hardened heart. Again and again, he ignored warnings, dismissed suffering, and clung to control even while his nation crumbled around him. Pride convinced him that yielding would weaken him, when in reality humility would have saved both his kingdom and his people. Like a captain refusing to change course during a storm, Pharaoh mistook stubbornness for strength until disaster became unavoidable.
History repeatedly confirms the lesson of Exodus. Leaders who refuse accountability eventually damage everyone under their authority. Governments, corporations, and even families can drift into oppression when those in power stop accepting correction. Pride blinds people gradually. A person becomes so committed to protecting image, influence, or authority that they lose the ability to recognize reality clearly. The danger of unchecked power is not only cruelty toward others, but self-destruction from within.
God delivered Israel not merely to free slaves, but to demonstrate that tyranny cannot endure forever. Freedom rooted in moral law will ultimately outlast systems built on fear and domination. Christ Himself modeled righteous authority through humility, service, and sacrifice rather than coercion. Strong leadership is not measured by how tightly someone controls others, but by how faithfully they submit themselves to truth.
