“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” — Exodus 20:3
“Idolatry begins not with carved images, but with misplaced devotion.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The commandment to have no other gods before the Lord is as urgent today as it was in ancient times. Idolatry is not limited to statues or altars of stone. It reveals itself in anything we elevate above God in priority, trust, or affection. Success, comfort, approval, and control can quietly take the throne of the heart if we are not watchful. These modern idols rarely announce themselves. They blend into daily life, slowly redirecting our loyalty away from the One who gave us life and liberty.
The danger of idolatry is not only that it dishonors God, but that it diminishes us. We become like what we worship. When we center our lives on temporary things, we inherit their instability. Careers shift, opinions change, and material gain fades, leaving the soul unsettled. God, however, is constant. Anchoring our devotion in Him brings clarity and order. It aligns our choices with eternal truth and strengthens our ability to act with purpose and integrity. True freedom is not found in serving many masters, but in surrendering to the One who is perfectly just and unchanging.
Avoiding idolatry requires honest self-examination. What do we fear losing most? What do we pursue at the expense of what is right? These questions reveal where our devotion lies. Christ invites us to reorder our hearts, to seek first the kingdom of God, and to trust that all else will fall into its proper place. When He is first, everything else is rightly framed. This is the essence of Christlike living: to love God above all and to let that love govern every other allegiance.
