“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.” — Daniel 3:17
"Convictions are proven not when they are convenient, but when they cost you something to keep them." — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3 is one of Scripture’s clearest examples of moral courage. Faced with King Nebuchadnezzar’s command to bow before a golden image, they refused. Their decision was not based on pride or rebellion. It was rooted in a higher loyalty to God. While everyone around them chose the safety of conformity, these three men chose faithfulness. They understood that truth does not change simply because a majority accepts a lie.
Standing firm in our convictions often feels like standing against a strong wind. It is easier to drift with the current than to resist it. A lighthouse does not move with the waves, and a compass does not change direction because travelers disagree with it. In the same way, God’s moral law provides a fixed standard in a world that constantly shifts. Freedom is not found in doing whatever is popular. True freedom comes from living according to eternal principles, even when there is pressure to compromise.
What makes this story especially powerful is that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego trusted God regardless of the outcome. They declared that God was able to deliver them, but even if He did not, they would not bow. Their faith was not dependent on comfort or rescue. When they were thrown into the fiery furnace, God walked with them through the trial. The same principle applies today. When we stand for what is right, we may face criticism, loss, or discomfort, but Christ never abandons those who remain faithful to Him.
Scripture:
“If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” — Daniel 3:17-18
