"Remember Lot’s wife!" — Luke 17:32
"A future blessed by God is often found by releasing what He has already called you to leave behind." — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
When God delivered Lot and his family from the destruction of Sodom, the instruction was simple: flee and do not look back. Yet Lot’s wife turned her eyes toward the city she was leaving and became a pillar of salt. Her story is brief, but its lesson is profound. God was leading her to safety, but her heart remained attached to what He was rescuing her from. Looking back was more than a glance. It revealed a reluctance to let go of a life that could not continue.
Many people struggle with the same temptation today. We look back at old mistakes, past successes, broken relationships, missed opportunities, or former comforts. It is natural to remember the past, but dangerous to become anchored to it. A driver who stares into the rearview mirror will eventually drift off the road. The mirror has value, but it was never meant to guide the journey. God gives us memories to teach us, not to trap us.
Faith requires forward movement. The Lord often calls us to leave behind habits, fears, grudges, and identities that no longer belong in the life He is building. Freedom comes when we trust that what lies ahead under God’s direction is better than anything we left behind. Lot’s wife teaches us that divided loyalties can prevent us from fully receiving God’s promises. Christ continually invites us to follow Him forward, trusting His path more than our attachments to the past.
