“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17
“Our laws are a reflection of who we are and where we place our trust, they entrench our fears, reveal our cares and terrify the unjust, like us, they may be full of flaws and borne out of disgust, and instead of sowing unity they breed widespread mistrust.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Every law is a mirror. When a society puts its convictions into writing, it reveals what it honors, what it fears, and what it hopes to preserve. America’s early laws leaned on a trust in God and the unchanging reality of natural rights. In time, many laws have shifted toward fear, motivated more by suspicion than by confidence in moral agency. Fear-based laws may control conduct for a season, but they cannot create unity. God’s laws stand apart because they arise from love, order, and liberty. Divine law strengthens the soul and steadies a nation. When people rely only on man-made rules without anchoring them in eternal truth, division grows. When we align with divine principles, peace has room to flourish.
This pattern is not limited to legislatures or courtrooms. Each of us forms “laws” in our homes, workplaces, and communities. These rules shape how we speak, how we forgive, and how we treat one another. Some rules arise from trust, encouraging honesty and cooperation. Others quietly grow from fear. A family rule that discourages open conversation may seem like protection from conflict, yet it deepens distance. A business culture that assumes employees cannot be trusted may feel efficient, yet it slowly erodes goodwill and initiative. Fear-driven rules shrink hearts. Trust-driven rules strengthen them. Christ invites us to build our personal laws on His example, allowing love to govern where anxiety once dictated the terms.
When we let divine law shape our smallest decisions, we learn to trust God more than our insecurities. We begin to see that unity is not an accident but a fruit of living by higher principles. Christlike living blossoms whenever our rules reflect His mercy, His justice, and His peace.
Scripture:
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17
Daily Application:
Examine one “law” you live by today, whether spoken or unspoken. Ask whether it grows out of trust and love or fear and control, then replace any fear-based rule with one grounded in faith and integrity.
