“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” — Philippians 4:11
“Happiness is like a perfume. You have to put it on yourself for others to appreciate it. If you leave the responsibility of your happiness to someone else you will reap disappointment.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Happiness, like perfume, begins with personal application. You cannot share what you have not first experienced. Too often, we look outward—toward people, possessions, or circumstances—to bring us joy, forgetting that true and lasting happiness springs from within. The Apostle Paul’s declaration in Philippians 4:11 is a masterclass in emotional independence: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” This learning process reveals that happiness is not about conditions but about conviction—a decision to live with gratitude, peace, and trust regardless of life’s fluctuations.
When we depend on others to make us happy, we hand over the steering wheel of our emotional well-being. No human being, no matter how loving or well-intentioned, can sustain the impossible task of keeping another person perpetually happy. That’s not their job, it’s ours. A mature life recognizes that external validation is fleeting, while inner joy, grounded in faith and gratitude, endures.
Those who cultivate happiness internally radiate it naturally. Their peace becomes contagious. Their smiles disarm bitterness. Their optimism brings light into otherwise dark places. In contrast, those who outsource happiness to others often live in a cycle of unmet expectations and resentment, always waiting for someone else to deliver what only they can produce.
Happiness is not found; it’s made. It’s not given; it’s chosen. And like perfume, when you apply it daily through gratitude, faith, and purpose, others can sense it and are lifted by your example. A joyful heart is a quiet testimony of trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness—a fragrance that can change the atmosphere of an entire room.
Scripture:
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.” — Philippians 4:11
Daily Application:
Today, refuse to let anyone or anything dictate your emotional temperature. Start your morning by identifying three reasons to be grateful—no matter how small. Speak them aloud or write them down. Gratitude resets perspective and invites joy. Throughout the day, notice how your outlook changes when you focus on what’s right rather than what’s wrong.
Then, perform one act of kindness that shares your joy with someone else—a compliment, a helping hand, or a smile. Remember, perfume’s beauty is realized when it’s shared. By spreading happiness, you deepen your own.
Take full ownership of your emotional life today. You can’t control every event, but you can control your response. And that response can be fragrant with peace, gratitude, and joy.

Wonderful words! It is true that happiness can be spread it is called the ripple effect. Also there are mirror neurons, so when a person sees another who is happy and joyful, their brain turns on those similar neurons so they can imagine happiness and joy that is possible. People must, despite negativity they see in the world, be a crusader for the good, hope and having a
positive perspective as those are the ones who are examples of what is and what can be for others.
