"Choose you this day whom ye will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15
“We live in a time when economic difficulties coupled with the divisiveness of the political class is pushing people to their wits end. However, we cannot make excuses of our circumstances. We all have a choice either to act or to be acted upon.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Every generation faces trials that test both its resolve and its character. Ours is no exception. Rising costs of living, political polarization, and social unrest tempt many to surrender to despair, frustration, or bitterness. Yet amid all this turbulence, one unchanging truth remains: we are not helpless spectators; we are moral agents endowed with choice.
Circumstances may limit our options, but they never eliminate our agency. Even in the bleakest environments, the human spirit retains the divine power to choose faith over fear, gratitude over resentment, and courage over apathy. This is what it means to be made in the image of God, to possess the ability to act rather than be acted upon.
The difference between agents and victims does not lie in what happens to them, but in how they interpret and respond to it. Agents look inward and upward, asking, “What can I do with what I have?” Victims look outward, asking, “Why isn’t someone fixing this for me?” Over time, this simple difference in mindset determines whether one’s life becomes a story of growth or a cycle of frustration.
When we forfeit our agency, we also forfeit our dignity. But when we embrace responsibility, even in small things, we become co-creators with God in shaping our destiny. Agency is not merely the power to choose; it is the willingness to own the consequences of our choices. It’s the courage to say, “This is my life, and I will not waste it blaming others.”
The divine ruth that we are agents endowed with power to act and not objects to be acted upon liberates us from the paralysis of self-pity and reminds us that while we can’t always control our environment, we can always choose our attitude, our focus, and our next step.
Scripture:
“Choose you this day whom ye will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” — Joshua 24:15
Daily Application:
Think of one area of your life where you’ve been feeling trapped, perhaps by financial strain, work stress, or strained relationships. Write down the words, “I still have a choice.” Then ask yourself, “What can I do today, no matter how small, to move this situation forward?”
It could be reaching out to someone for advice, creating a budget, praying for wisdom, or simply changing your perspective. Small acts of agency restore momentum, and momentum restores hope. Remember, you are not a victim of your circumstances; you are a steward of your choices. Today, act rather than be acted upon.
