“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”— Romans 12:2
“One secret to overcoming personal weaknesses, is to understand that your choices are influenced by your beliefs. No matter what your weakness, there is a belief you hold whether conscious or not, that fuels it. So dig deep into your beliefs and eliminate the ones that fuel your bad choices.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Every action begins in the mind. Our choices, whether good or bad, flow from what we truly believe—not what we claim to believe. This is why behavior modification alone rarely leads to lasting change. Behind every weakness is a belief system that sustains it. It might be a lie about your worth, a distorted view of God’s nature, or a false promise that sin will satisfy. Until that belief is uncovered and replaced, the weakness will persist.
God’s invitation to transformation is not merely to “try harder” but to “think differently.” Romans 12:2 reminds us that renewal of the mind precedes transformation of behavior. The gospel calls us to a reorientation of belief—to see ourselves as God sees us: capable of righteousness through His grace, not destined to repeat failure. When you shift your belief from “I am weak and helpless” to “I am empowered by God to overcome,” your actions begin to reflect that truth.
The Holy Spirit often reveals false beliefs through conviction. When a weakness frustrates you, don’t just pray for strength to resist—pray for revelation to understand the lie beneath it. Ask: What untrue thing am I believing that makes this behavior seem reasonable or comforting? That moment of honesty can unlock the door to real freedom.
Scripture:
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”— Romans 12:2
Daily Application:
Today, identify one persistent weakness in your life. Then, prayerfully ask:
What belief makes this weakness appealing or difficult to let go of?
Is that belief consistent with God’s truth and your divine potential?
Once identified, write down the false belief and replace it with a truthful statement grounded in Scripture. For example, replace “I’ll never change” with “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Begin to repeat and live by that truth today.
