“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”— Galatians 6:2
“I always hear people say they feel true joy and fulfillment when they love and serve others. So if our purpose on this earth is to love each other, serve others and administer to the sick and afflicted, how would that be possible if no one had any need?” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
It is a profound truth that our greatest joys often arise from moments of service, not comfort. The presence of poverty, sickness, and affliction in the world is not evidence of God’s absence but rather a reflection of His trust in our ability to act as His hands. The needs of others give us a sacred invitation to grow beyond self-interest and discover the divine joy that comes from compassion and selfless love.
If every need were eliminated, our opportunities to express charity, patience, humility, and mercy would vanish with them. Service allows us to become partners with God in alleviating suffering and lifting the downtrodden. It sanctifies both the giver and the receiver, for every act of service transforms two souls; the one who gives and the one who receives.
True discipleship means seeing human need not as an inconvenience but as a call to action. Christ Himself sought out the poor, the brokenhearted, and the weary because in serving them, He revealed the character of God’s love. We, too, become more like Him when we choose to notice and respond to the pain around us.
The existence of need reminds us that we are interdependent, that no one can thrive alone. Through this divine design, we are bound together by service, creating a community that mirrors heaven’s compassion. In meeting the needs of others, we fulfill the very law of Christ, which is to love one another as He has loved us.
Scripture:
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”— Galatians 6:2
Daily Application:
Rather than being discouraged by the magnitude of global suffering, focus on the small circle of influence God has entrusted to you. Identify one person today who could benefit from your time, your encouragement, or your generosity. It might be a neighbor who feels forgotten, a friend burdened by hardship, or a stranger who needs a kind word. In choosing to act, you’ll find that your own burdens feel lighter, your perspective clearer, and your heart closer to Christ.
