"Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.'" — Matthew 5:37
“It is better to be trusted than to be loved,” my mum always used to say. As a husband and a father, I now understand why. Your love for your family will not feed, clothe, or shelter them.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Love is a gift of the heart, but trust is the foundation of a life together. Love may express itself in words and feelings, but trust is proven by reliability and sacrifice. When families know they can depend on us, love moves beyond sentiment and becomes a secure bond.
Think about it: a child may love a parent naturally, but it is only when the parent is consistently present; protecting, providing, and keeping promises; that love matures into respect and security. A spouse may feel affection, but when promises are broken or commitments neglected, love begins to erode. Good intentions without dependable follow-through can wound deeply.
Trust is not built in a single dramatic act; it is earned in the quiet, repetitive moments; showing up when you say you will, keeping small promises, paying attention to details others might miss. It’s in these moments that faith in one another is either cemented or chipped away.
Families need both love and trust, but trust is what makes love safe to grow. Without trust, love feels fragile. With trust, love flourishes in confidence.
Scripture:
Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’” — Matthew 5:37
Daily Application:
Look closely at your closest relationships; your spouse, your children, your parents, your friends. Are you striving harder to be loved, or to be trustworthy? Identify one specific area where your reliability could improve. Perhaps it’s following through on commitments at home, being punctual, or finishing what you promised. Choose one commitment today that you will fulfill without excuse.
