Why America Must Defend Liberty from Its Abusers

Liberty at the Crossroads

Liberty is both America’s greatest gift and her greatest vulnerability. It is the golden inheritance passed down from our Founders, purchased with blood, preserved by courage, and entrusted to each generation as a sacred trust. But liberty is never self-sustaining. Like a garden, it flourishes when tended and withers when neglected. And like any treasure, it can be stolen, misused, or weaponized. Ronald Reagan put it best when he said:

“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” — Ronald Reagan

The danger today is not only that government might trample liberty through tyranny, but that individuals and groups exploit liberty’s protections to weaken the very fabric of the Republic. In other words: freedom without guardrails of vigilance becomes license, and license becomes the seedbed of chaos.

When Freedom is Abused

The Constitution enshrines “ordered liberty,” not unbounded autonomy. James Madison warned in Federalist No. 55: “There is a degree of depravity in mankind which requires a certain degree of circumspection and distrust.” Liberty requires law. Freedom requires responsibility.

Today, we face an epidemic of abuses, people twisting constitutional rights into weapons against the nation that secures them. Let us examine a few:

1. Fraudulent Asylum Claims

America is a beacon of refuge for the oppressed, but that beacon was dimmed by mass abuse during Joe Biden’s presidency. On his watch, millions filed meritless asylum claims, often coached by cartels, clogging courts and overwhelming border enforcement. Refugees with genuine claims suffered because opportunists exploited our compassion and our elected leaders allowed it either deliberately or through sheer neglect. Liberty demands discernment. Hence immigration law must be enforced so that true victims find shelter, while fraudsters are repelled and deported.

2. Extremist Radicalization Under Free Speech

The First Amendment protects speech, even offensive speech, but not incitement to imminent violence (Brandenburg v. Ohio, 1969). Yet, Islamists, neo-Nazis, groups like Antifa, and anarchists exploit free platforms to radicalize the vulnerable. The line should be clear: persuasion is free, violence is not. Our law enforcement should hence implement necessary guardrails, especially to identify how memes, euphemisms, and new speak is being used to circumvent traditional warning systems.

3. Endless Due Process Appeals

The right to due process is sacred, but endless frivolous appeals clog courts and deny justice to victims. Criminals exploit procedural loopholes, dragging cases out for decades. Liberty is not preserved when justice is delayed indefinitely.

4. Tax-Exempt Nonprofits as Trojan Horses

Nonprofits enjoy tax exemptions to serve the common good, yet foreign agents funnel propaganda through them, laundering influence under the guise of charity. This is not free association; it is subversion. During the Cold War, we learned how adversaries weaponize openness. Guardrails must be firm against foreign infiltration.

5. Religious Exemptions Shielding Crime

Faith deserves the fullest protection, but no faith excuses abuse. Cult leaders claiming “religious freedom” to cover child exploitation or fraud stain the true meaning of religious liberty. Scripture reminds us: “God is not the author of confusion, but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33). Liberty of conscience never excuses crime.

6. Academic Indoctrination Masquerading as Education

The university was once a marketplace of ideas. Today, it often resembles a monopoly of ideology. Students are told what to think, not how to think. Under academic freedom, professors use taxpayer-funded platforms to undermine the very Republic that secures their tenure. Freedom of inquiry must be protected, but indoctrination is not inquiry.

7. Sanctuary Cities Defying Federal Law

Local governments refusing to enforce federal immigration law undermine the rule of law itself. No city is sovereign above the Union. Lincoln once said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” When sanctuary policies shield criminals, liberty becomes fragmented into lawlessness.

8. Media Disinformation and Manufactured Narratives

The First Amendment protects a free press, but not a dishonest one. Today’s media often functions less as a watchdog and more as a partisan attack dog. Disinformation dressed as journalism corrodes democracy. Liberty demands truth-telling, not propaganda.

9. Riots Disguised as Protests

The right to peaceable assembly does not include burning cities or assaulting police. From Portland to Kenosha, violence has masqueraded as protest. Martin Luther King Jr. insisted: “Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon.” When protest becomes riot, liberty’s boundary has been crossed.
