“A desire becomes a dangerous master when we give it authority that belongs to God.” — Alma Ohene-Opare

Commentary:
David had faced Goliath with courage, yet he later failed to govern his own desires. After seeing Bathsheba bathing, he inquired about her and learned that she was Uriah’s wife. He nevertheless sent for her and committed adultery. His efforts to conceal his wrongdoing ultimately led him to arrange Uriah’s death. The man who had trusted God against a giant used his royal power to take what was forbidden and silence the consequences. David’s fall reminds us that past faithfulness does not remove our present need for vigilance. His responsibility was to govern his conduct, regardless of what he saw or desired.
Lust includes sexual coveting, but its pattern can also appear in an unchecked hunger for wealth, power, recognition, or revenge. We begin treating something we desire as something we are entitled to possess, whatever the cost to others. A bridle helps direct a horse’s strength toward a purpose. Likewise, bridling our passions means bringing our desires under the direction of truth and God’s commandments. Attraction, ambition, and emotion need wise governance. Temptation itself is not the same as choosing sin, but deliberately feeding it weakens our resistance. What we repeatedly entertain can become what we eventually justify. Freedom grows as we learn to choose what is right even when our appetites demand something else.
David’s response to Nathan’s rebuke also teaches us to stop defending what God calls us to repent of. Confession did not erase the harm or its consequences, but David acknowledged his sin and pleaded for a clean heart. We, too, must be willing to interrupt the pattern before another person suffers from our indulgence. That may mean closing a screen, abandoning a dishonest pursuit, seeking help, or admitting a wrong we have concealed. Through Jesus Christ, we can seek forgiveness and strength to change. We need not surrender to every impulse simply because we feel it. Christlike living means governing our passions so that our choices honor God and protect our neighbors.
Scripture:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10
Daily Application:
Identify one desire you have been feeding at the expense of your integrity, and remove one source of temptation today while asking God for strength to choose differently.

In today’s political climate it is difficult for me to reign in my attempts to respond. I know too much for my own good. The wise man said that much learning brought trouble and he was/is right.
I need to remember that while I need to do what is right for our country, GOD IS IN CONTROL and HIS WILL, WILL BE DONE.
I think of Habakkuk- though there be no food, rain, etc, I will wait on the Lord.
Be still and KNOW that I am God.
Thank you for this post. I NEED IT!
