“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
“Cheer is not the absence of burden, but the presence of trust.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Life rarely unfolds without resistance. There are pressures that weigh on the mind and uncertainties that test the heart. Yet the call to “be of good cheer” is not a suggestion reserved for easy days. It is a command rooted in eternal perspective. Cheerfulness, in its truest form, is an act of faith. It declares that God’s hand is still guiding, even when the path feels steep.
Consider a traveler crossing a mountain pass. The climb is exhausting, the air thin, and the summit unseen. But the seasoned traveler presses forward with steady resolve, not because the journey is easy, but because he trusts what lies beyond the ridge. In much the same way, choosing cheer in difficult moments is an expression of spiritual maturity. It reflects confidence that hardship is not the end of the story. Freedom itself depends on this principle. A discouraged soul is easily swayed, but a cheerful heart, anchored in truth, remains steady and unafraid.
Christ taught this principle not only in word but in example. Even in the face of suffering, He spoke peace and extended hope. His invitation to be of good cheer is not disconnected from reality. It is a higher view of it. When we align our hearts with His, we find that cheerfulness becomes less about circumstance and more about covenant. It becomes a quiet strength that carries us forward with dignity, purpose, and trust in God’s plan.
