“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” — Proverbs 23:7
“A hopeful mind does not ignore reality, it chooses to see God’s greater reality above it.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
Positive thinking, when rooted in truth, is not mere wishful optimism. It is a deliberate alignment of our thoughts with God’s promises. Life will present daunting odds, moments where the path forward seems blocked and the outcome uncertain. Yet the mind we choose in those moments matters. Just as a compass does not change the terrain but guides the traveler through it, a hopeful perspective does not remove difficulty but directs us with clarity and courage.
Negativity narrows vision. It convinces us that present obstacles define our future. But optimism grounded in faith expands vision. It reminds us that God is not limited by what we see. Consider how a small flame pushes back an entire room of darkness. Light does not need to overpower darkness in strength, only to exist faithfully. In the same way, choosing hopeful thoughts, anchored in God’s truth, shifts our entire outlook and empowers action even when circumstances seem overwhelming.
This kind of thinking is an exercise of agency. We are not victims of every thought that enters our mind. We can choose to dwell on what is true, good, and eternal. When we do, we invite strength, resilience, and peace into our lives. Christ exemplified this perfectly, seeing beyond the cross to the joy set before Him. To think with hope is to live with faith, and to live with faith is to walk in a Christlike way.
