“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” — Matthew 5:5
“Meekness is not the absence of power, but the discipline to place power under the direction of truth.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
In a world that confuses loudness with leadership and aggression with courage, meekness is often misunderstood. Many assume the meek are timid, passive, or unwilling to stand. In reality, meekness is the opposite of weakness. It is strength governed by principle. Like a well-trained horse that could run wild but chooses to obey the reins, a meek person possesses capacity, conviction, and courage, yet submits them to moral law rather than impulse.
True meekness requires inner mastery. It is easier to lash out than to restrain, easier to dominate than to serve, easier to demand than to persuade. Meekness chooses restraint not because it lacks options, but because it honors higher purposes. This kind of strength builds families, preserves freedom, and sustains communities. It refuses to surrender agency to anger, pride, or fear. It stands firm without becoming harsh and speaks truth without cruelty.
Christ embodied this strength perfectly. He was never powerless, yet He was always submitted to the Father’s will. He confronted hypocrisy, overturned injustice, and endured suffering without surrendering His mission. His meekness was not silence in the face of evil, but obedience to eternal truth. When we choose meekness, we align our strength with His example. We learn to act with courage that is calm, conviction that is clean, and authority that is anchored in love. This is the meekness that reflects Christlike living.
