“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” — Romans 12:2
“Love is not agreement. It is the disciplined choice to seek another’s good, even when they oppose you.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
We are living in a season of sharp words and sharpened opinions. Political vitriol rolls across our nation like a summer storm, loud and relentless. Recriminations are traded as if they were currency. It is easy to love those who vote like us, think like us, and affirm what we already believe. It is much harder to love the neighbor whose yard sign makes our blood pressure rise.
Yet Christ did not command us to love the agreeable. He commanded us to love our enemies.
A nation cannot remain free if its citizens cannot govern their own spirits. Self-government precedes national government. When contempt replaces conviction, and when outrage replaces reason, freedom begins to erode from the inside. Loving our enemies does not mean surrendering truth or silencing conviction. It means refusing to let hatred take root in our hearts. Just as a homeowner pulls weeds to protect the harvest, we must uproot bitterness to protect our character.
Every person, even the one who frustrates us most, is a soul accountable to God. When we remember that, our tone changes. Our words grow steadier. We speak firmly but without cruelty. We disagree without dehumanizing. That kind of love is not weakness. It is moral strength under control. It reflects a Savior who prayed for those who nailed Him to a cross. Choosing that path in today’s climate is a quiet but powerful act of Christlike living.
Scripture:
“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” — Matthew 5:44
Daily Application:
Pray for someone whose political views trouble you, and ask God to bless them with wisdom, peace, and good.
