“And thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” — Matthew 22:39
“Love proves itself not in opinions spoken, but in burdens carried.” — Alma Ohene-Opare
Commentary:
The story of the Good Samaritan shattered cultural expectations because the hero was the person society least expected to act righteously. Religious leaders passed by the wounded man while preserving their routines and appearances, but the Samaritan stopped, sacrificed his time, and personally cared for a stranger. Compassion crossed ethnic hostility, political tension, and social division. Christ exposed a timeless truth: morality is measured less by what people claim to believe and more by what they willingly do for others in need.
Modern society often encourages people to sort one another into categories before extending empathy. Political labels, economic status, race, nationality, and ideology can become barriers that harden the heart. Yet suffering rarely asks for identification before arriving. A hungry family, a struggling neighbor, or a lonely soul does not need slogans nearly as much as presence and action. A society that outsources all compassion to institutions eventually loses the human responsibility to personally care for one another. Like muscles that weaken from disuse, empathy deteriorates when people stop practicing it directly.
The Samaritan’s example reminds believers that love requires inconvenience. Compassion costs time, energy, and sacrifice. Christ Himself became the ultimate Good Samaritan by rescuing wounded humanity when others could not heal it. Christian living means refusing to let tribalism overpower mercy. The Lord calls His people to see neighbors not as political projects, but as souls created in the image of God.
